Glazing method statement template: plan the lift, installation and safe handover
A glazing method statement should describe how the actual glass units will be delivered, handled, lifted, fixed and handed over at a particular site. The work sequence needs to connect each stage to the assessed controls for heavy or fragile glass, sharp edges, work at height, lifting equipment and people below. Copy the form below and replace every bracket with real measurements, equipment, roles and decisions. A generic signed template cannot make a lifting operation or work platform safe.
This template is for building glazing in Great Britain, such as windows, façade panels or shopfronts. It does not cover automotive windscreens. The existing Complys glazing RAMS guide owns the broad explanation; this proposed page owns a copyable work-sequence form. If the current repository already contains a dedicated glazing method statement form, merge this into that owner.
HSE says a method statement can communicate a safe construction sequence and the precautions identified by risk assessment. It is especially useful for complex or higher-risk tasks. It is not a universal statutory form that every glazing job must have as a separately titled document. The contractor still needs the appropriate risk assessment, coordination, competent people and physical controls. HSE construction administration and work-at-height guidance explain these principles.
Before the form: decisions that cannot be left to the installer on the day
Confirm the exact unit dimensions, weight, centre of gravity and fixing specification from the supplier and designer. Check delivery route and storage; determine whether mechanical lifting is required. If lifting equipment is used, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 require the operation to be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely. The complexity of the plan should match the lift. Do not assume a suction cup, crane, MEWP or manual team lift is suitable without assessing the unit, attachment, route and conditions.
Check the opening or support structure, access platform, edge protection, exclusion zone and public interface. A rooflight or fragile roof is a separate, critical fall hazard; HSE's fragile-surface guidance must inform the method. Review the sealant and cleaner safety data sheets and COSHH assessments. Coordinate with other trades and obtain site permits. If any of these facts are unknown, the template should show a hold point rather than a guess.
Copyable glazing method statement
A. Document and scope
| Field | Site-specific entry |
|---|---|
| Project, client and exact opening/area | [ ] |
| Contractor, supervisor and contact | [ ] |
| Work date, shift, version and approver | [ ] |
| Building glazing type and number of units | [ ] |
| Unit dimensions, weight and manufacturer reference | [ ] |
| Drawings, design/fixing specification and setting-out information | [ ] |
| Access level, platform/MEWP/scaffold and edge protection | [ ] |
| Lift plan reference, equipment and competent planner (if lifting equipment used) | [ ] |
| Risk assessment, COSHH, permits and site rules | [ ] |
| Exclusion area, public/occupant route and emergency contact | [ ] |
| Work outside scope, including structural alteration or specialist façade design | [ ] |
Stop-work authority: [Name/role]. Change approval: [Name/role]. If glass weight, opening dimensions, support, lifting attachment, weather, access or crew differs from this version, stop and have a competent person reassess the method before continuing.
B. Pre-start hold points
| Hold point | Evidence / result | Who releases it? |
|---|---|---|
| Design and fixing details match delivered unit | [ ] | [ ] |
| Safe delivery route, storage frame and ground bearing/access confirmed | [ ] | [ ] |
| Unit inspected for damage and identification | [ ] | [ ] |
| Handling or lift method and people confirmed | [ ] | [ ] |
| Lifting-equipment suitability, inspections and plan confirmed where applicable | [ ] | [ ] |
| Scaffold/MEWP/work platform and fall controls checked | [ ] | [ ] |
| Rooflight/fragile-surface risk excluded or separately controlled | [ ] | [ ] |
| Exclusion zones and public diversion in place | [ ] | [ ] |
| Sealant SDS/COSHH and ventilation controls ready | [ ] | [ ] |
| Rescue, first aid and broken-glass response briefed | [ ] | [ ] |
A pre-start tick means the stated evidence was actually checked. A blank “competent” box is not a lift plan. Record the inspection or examination reference for lifting equipment where applicable. HSE's planning guidance distinguishes routine from complex lifts and emphasises competence, visibility, attachment, weather and load stability.
C. People, plant and protective controls
| Element | Complete for the job |
|---|---|
| Supervisor, installers, slinger/signaller and lift planner roles | [ ] |
| Unit weight and assessed manual-handling demand | [ ] |
| Hoist, crane, vacuum device or other aid and inspection reference | [ ] |
| Transport frame, restraints and unloading arrangement | [ ] |
| Work platform, edge/fragile-surface controls and inspection | [ ] |
| Glass-edge and hand protection chosen from assessment | [ ] |
| Glass breakage containment, sharps and disposal arrangements | [ ] |
| Sealant/cleaner, SDS, ventilation and skin controls | [ ] |
| Exclusion barriers, banksman and communication method | [ ] |
HSE's construction window-installation case study illustrates how a mobile hoist and suction frame can reduce manual handling for heavy units. It is an example, not approval for any specific unit or site. Select aids to suit actual load and location. Do not solve an unsuitable lift by simply adding more people.
D. Step-by-step work method
| Step | Describe the actual sequence | Control and record |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Brief and isolate | [Induct crew, check revision, establish exclusion area and public route.] | [Sign brief; confirm occupants and other trades informed.] |
| 2. Deliver and unload | [State vehicle position, unit restraint release and unloading method.] | [Keep people clear of load/fall zone; assess vehicle movement.] |
| 3. Inspect and store | [Identify units and inspect for damage; use suitable vertical frame/secure support.] | [Do not use damaged unit; prevent tip and edge contact.] |
| 4. Prepare opening | [Check structure, dimensions, fixings, platform and adjacent hazards.] | [Stop if design/support differs; maintain edge protection.] |
| 5. Prepare lift/transfer | [Follow competent lift plan or assessed manual method.] | [Check attachment, capacity, communication, weather and exclusion.] |
| 6. Position unit | [Move along planned route and offer to opening.] | [No person beneath suspended load; maintain control and fall prevention.] |
| 7. Fix and release equipment | [Install specified fixings/packers and confirm support before releasing lift.] | [Competent verification to drawings/manufacturer instructions.] |
| 8. Seal and finish | [Apply specified sealant/cleaner; protect opening and adjacent work.] | [COSHH controls and curing/site access per product data.] |
| 9. Inspect and hand over | [Check fixing, finish, damaged glass, temporary support removal and area condition.] | [Record defects, disposal and formal release to client/site.] |
The installer should not infer fixing spacing, glass specification or structural capacity from this form. Those belong to the project design, applicable standards and manufacturer's instructions. If the unit breaks, stop movement, clear people, secure fragments and use the site emergency and waste procedure. Do not continue the lift with compromised equipment or material.
E. Interfaces, emergencies and changes
| Scenario | Site-specific response |
|---|---|
| Public enters exclusion zone | [Stop lift; clear area; reset barrier and briefing.] |
| Glass cracks or breaks | [Stop; protect people; contain and dispose by safe method.] |
| Wind or weather changes | [Suspend work when lift/platform criteria no longer met; planner reassesses.] |
| Vacuum/lifting equipment fault | [Stop; secure load; isolate equipment; obtain competent instruction.] |
| Fall or person trapped | [Use site rescue plan; summon emergency services; preserve safe access.] |
| Unexpected structure or fixing issue | [Do not improvise; refer to designer/supervisor and revise.] |
| Sealant substitution | [Review SDS, COSHH and compatibility before use.] |
A generic “call 999” entry is not enough for someone stranded on a MEWP or a complex façade lift. The rescue method, trained people and equipment should be proportionate and available. Also specify who controls public or occupier movement while units are unsecured. Check HSE work-at-height guidance for the actual access scenario; ladders are not a default platform for heavy glass placement.
F. Briefing, approval and handover
| Person | Role | Current version briefed? | Questions/changes | Signature and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [ ] | Supervisor | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
| [ ] | Installer | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
| [ ] | Lift team | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
| [ ] | Site representative | [ ] | [ ] | [ ] |
At each shift or after a change, verify that unit, crew, platform and conditions still match. Replace superseded copies and brief new staff. Handover should record the installed units, outstanding defects, any temporary restrictions and who accepted the area. A signature records a briefing or decision; it cannot certify design adequacy by itself.
Example: replacing a shopfront pane
A contractor is replacing one large shopfront pane beside a pedestrian pavement. The unit weight and opening details are confirmed from the supplier; the selected lifting method is reviewed by a competent planner. The work zone closes the immediate pedestrian route, with the building owner agreeing an alternative. A damaged delivery frame is discovered before unloading, so the pre-start hold point fails: the crew does not improvise a manual carry. The supervisor arranges a suitable replacement arrangement, updates the lift plan and re-briefs. Once the glass is installed and fixings checked, the public route remains closed until the work area is free of shards, tools and uncured materials. This illustrates decisions the form should reveal; it is not a generic lift plan.
Typical template errors
- “Two operatives lift pane” without unit weight, dimensions, route or assessed handling method.
- Listing suction devices with no suitability, examination, pre-use check or competent lift plan.
- Using a fall-arrest harness as the first response to an unprotected edge.
- Forgetting people below a window, shopfront or rooflight.
- Assuming a rooflight will bear weight.
- Substituting a sealant without reviewing SDS, COSHH and compatibility.
- Releasing lifting equipment before the unit is securely fixed and checked.
- Failing to update the method when the delivered glass differs from the drawing.
Related Complys guidance and next step
The existing glazing RAMS guide provides explanatory context and the general method statement template covers other trades. The Complys RAMS page is a relevant commercial next step for producing a project-specific document. Its published feature and trial claims need implementation and terms verification at integration. A generated document still requires competent review and real site controls; it is not a certified lift plan.
Use this form to expose missing facts early. Then complete the actual risk assessment, lift/access plan and product-specific instructions, brief the crew and check controls on site before glass moves.
