Kitchen fitting method statement template

A kitchen fitting method statement should sequence the survey, safe removal, service coordination, cabinet and worktop installation, finishing, checks and handover for the actual room. The template below is for Great Britain. It must be completed with the site survey, drawings, product instructions, risk assessment and the competent trades responsible for electrical, gas and plumbing work. A kitchen refit can change quickly when old walls, live services or unexpected materials are exposed; the method needs explicit stop and change decisions.

This page is for the kitchen-installation task. The Complys general method statement template owns the cross-trade form, while the joinery/carpentry template covers wood fabrication and generic fixing. Here the distinctive job is coordinating units, appliances, worktops, services, occupants and a usable handover. It is not a gas-safety certificate, electrical installation certificate or building-control approval.

Confirm what the contract includes

Record whether the fitter removes existing cabinets, modifies walls or floors, installs new carcasses, cuts worktops, fits sinks and appliances, tiles or paints, or only assembles supplied units. Name the person responsible for each service disconnection, alteration, reconnection and test. Do not write “kitchen fitter to isolate gas and electricity” unless the people, competence and safe system are actually specified. If the property remains occupied, agree how residents will access water, cooking and exits during the work and how dust and tools will be kept away from them.

The drawing should identify unit layout, measurements, wall construction and fixing details, ventilation and clearance requirements, and any manufacturer constraints for appliances or worktops. A plan dimension is not a substitute for a site survey. Verify the location of pipes, cables and possible hidden hazards before drilling. In older buildings, review available asbestos information before disturbing suspect boards, floor coverings or insulation; HSE explains where asbestos may be present. This form does not permit asbestos removal or disturbance.

Copyable kitchen fitting method statement

Use the brackets as fields to complete. Strike out non-applicable work rather than leaving ambiguous tasks in the signed version.

A. Job information and responsibilities

FieldComplete for this kitchen
Property, room, GB nation and client/site contact[ ]
Contractor, site supervisor, version, author and review date[ ]
Occupancy and other trades working nearby[ ]

The work boundary should be clear to the client and every trade. A cabinet installer may fix units and coordinate positions but cannot infer that an appliance is safe to connect simply because it fits the opening. The appropriate qualified person should check and document work that falls within their trade and the applicable rules.

Do not start demolition or drilling when the service location is uncertain. If a wall is weaker than expected, the fixing specification must be reviewed. Do not assume a heavy cabinet will be supported by any available plug or board. When the worktop is natural or engineered stone, the fabricator and installer need a material-specific dust and handling plan. HSE's worktop guidance recommends completing cutting and sink/tap holes in a suitably equipped workplace before arrival and controlling any unavoidable on-site modification. The general kitchen fitting form must not be used as a dry stone-cutting method.

Cutting or sanding wood-based boards creates dust. HSE's construction guidance advises pre-cutting, dedicated areas and suitable on-tool extraction, with RPE where the assessment requires it. Stone worktops present a different hazard: respirable crystalline silica from cutting or grinding can cause serious lung disease. HSE's installation guidance sets out controls for those tasks. Record whether the fitting team is prohibited from modifying a stone surface on site; do not let a last-minute sink cut bypass the specialist method. A dry broom or compressed air can spread hazardous dust and is not a clean-up plan.

D. Work sequence and trade handoffs

StepActual methodControl and evidence
1. Brief and protect[Brief current plan; segregate occupants, protect finishes and maintain exits.][Attendance, barriers, client arrangements.]
2. Survey and mark[Measure walls/floors, units, appliance positions and service routes.][Release survey and hidden-service points.]
3. Isolate by responsible trade[Name who isolates and proves safe each affected service.][Permit/test evidence; no assumed isolation.]
4. Remove old fittings[Describe cabinet/worktop removal, sharp edges and waste route.][Asbestos/unknown-material stop point.]
5. Prepare substrate[Repair/level only approved work; confirm fixing support.][Competent review of weak or changed wall.]
6. Deliver and stage new items[Check products, batch/condition and store without blocking exits.][Handling aid and stability checks.]
7. Set and fix cabinets[Set datum, level, join, anchor and check alignment.][Fixing specification and load/support inspection.]
8. Install worktop[Use approved pre-fabricated or specialist worktop method.][Handling, dust and cut-out controls; no unplanned stone cutting.]
9. Fit doors, trim and finishes[Set hardware, seal, finish or tile as specified.][COSHH, ventilation and curing.]
10. Service connection and tests[Competent trade completes and records relevant work.][Evidence/records before use.]
11. Inspect and clean[Check operation, clearances, leaks, damage and waste removal.][Defect list, specialist test and client acceptance.]
12. Hand over[Explain use, maintenance, limitations and remaining defects.][Manufacturer instructions and trade records.]

Insert inspection points before work becomes concealed: wall supports before a cabinet is loaded, service routes before boxing in, and worktop support before heavy slabs are placed. An installer should not close an access panel over a leak or unresolved electrical issue merely to reach a practical completion date.

E. Stop-work and change register

TriggerImmediate response and restart authority
Unexpected live service or unknown isolation state[Stop, protect the area, competent trade isolates/verifies.]
Suspected asbestos or unidentified older material[Stop disturbance; competent assessment.]
Weak substrate, incompatible fixing or changing wall layout[Stop affected installation; designer/competent person approves detail.]
Product or appliance differs from drawing/instructions[Hold installation; confirm clearances, ventilation and services.]
Damaged/too-heavy worktop or unavailable lifting aid[Do not lift; revise handling and support plan.]
Stone cut requested on site without approved specialist controls[Stop; arrange suitable fabrication or approved controlled method.]
Dust or fumes reach occupants[Stop, re-establish segregation and effective control.]
Leak, electrical fault or gas concern[Make safe under site emergency procedure; competent trade responds.]

Record who changed the method, why, the revised drawing or instruction and who was rebriefed. If the revised task is outside the fitter's competence or contract, assign it to the correct trade. The mere fact that a task is “small” does not remove the need for safe isolation, suitable controls or required testing.

F. Briefing and handover record

The handover record should distinguish a fitter's visual/functional checks from the tests and certificates that only the responsible competent service trade can provide. Record unresolved defects with an owner and date; do not describe an unfinished service as “tested” because an appliance has power.

Example: an occupied flat with an engineered-stone worktop

The survey shows that the new oven and sink positions differ from the old layout. The supervisor marks the existing cable and pipe routes, assigns service alterations to the relevant competent trades and books their isolation and later testing. The worktop is templated and cut off site, including sink and tap holes, so the fitting crew does not need to grind engineered stone inside the occupied flat. Workers pre-cut cabinet panels where possible, isolate the work zone and use effective on-tool extraction for necessary board trimming. When the old wall lining reveals an unidentified board, they stop disturbing it until competent assessment resolves the material. A weak wall section is referred for an approved fixing detail. After cabinets, worktop and finishes are checked, the service trades complete their tests and records before the client uses the kitchen. This is an example of sequencing and decision-making, not a method that approves a particular flat or worktop.
