Acclaim Accreditation: a practical guide for UK contractors

Acclaim Accreditation is a health and safety assessment scheme associated with UK contractor prequalification. Before applying, establish what your buyer actually asks for: an SSIP-approved health and safety assessment, a named Acclaim certificate, Constructionline registration, the Common Assessment Standard, or a combination. These are related but not interchangeable. Prepare evidence of how you manage your real work, then confirm Acclaim's current application route, scope, fees, assessment method and renewal terms directly with the scheme. Scheme details can change; this guide does not quote an unverified 2026 price or promise a pass.

Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) exists to reduce repeated health and safety assessment in procurement. Its supplier guidance explains that member schemes use core criteria and mutually recognise qualifying assessments through “Deem to Satisfy.” That principle can reduce duplicate assessment, but it does not automatically meet every buyer's project-specific, commercial, insurance or quality requirements. A client may ask for another evidence pack even after an SSIP assessment. Check the actual tender wording rather than buying several memberships on assumption.

What Acclaim can and cannot demonstrate

An SSIP assessment concerns organisational health and safety arrangements and evidence. It is not a licence to undertake a specialist trade, a guarantee that every site is safe or a replacement for task-specific risk assessments and supervision. Acclaim-related certificates show an assessed category and expiry date; a buyer should validate a certificate's current status through the scheme's official route. Where a buyer specifies a particular level, dutyholder role or assessment type, confirm that the category on your certificate matches it.

The live Complys article CHAS vs SafeContractor vs SMAS mentions Acclaim but is primarily a comparison of other schemes. This proposed page owns the *Acclaim application and evidence-preparation task*, not a general “best SSIP scheme” comparison. It should link to that comparison for readers deciding among schemes, while avoiding unsupported claims about relative popularity or price.

Check the buyer's requirement first

Ask the procurement contact: Is SSIP approval acceptable from any member scheme, or is a particular scheme named? Is the health and safety assessment enough, or is the buyer also asking for Common Assessment Standard (CAS) verification, financial standing, insurance limits, trade registrations, environmental evidence or project-specific documents? Is a certificate required at tender submission, contract award or site start? Does it need to remain current throughout the contract?

The answers determine whether Acclaim is useful and whether mutual recognition may be available. SSIP's Deem to Satisfy guidance has conditions and exceptions. Do not tell a buyer that they must accept a different credential without checking their procurement process and any extra requirements. If you already hold a qualifying SSIP assessment, ask Acclaim or the buyer whether Deem to Satisfy is available before paying for another full assessment.

Prepare evidence around the core criteria

Use SSIP's current core criteria as a starting checklist, then follow the current Acclaim question set and your assessed category. The criteria include a suitable health and safety policy and organisation, defined arrangements, competent advice, risk assessment and control, and evidence that the system is implemented. For construction dutyholders, role-specific evidence under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 may be relevant. The criteria are proportionate to size and work; a sole trader and a principal contractor do not have identical operations.

A practical evidence folder might contain:

AreaEvidence to assembleQuality check
Business identity and scopeLegal name, activities, trading locations, contact and assessment categoryMatches the entity and tasks in the application.
Health and safety policySigned current statement where applicable, named responsibilities and arrangementsReflects how the business works, not a borrowed generic document.

This table is a preparation aid, not a claim that Acclaim requests every row in exactly this form. The scheme's current application and SSIP criteria determine what must be submitted. Avoid fabricating a project record to satisfy a question. If you have no completed job of a particular type, explain your planned controls and ask the assessor how it should be evidenced.

A workable application process

1. Confirm route and scope. Use the official Acclaim/Constructionline channel and verify the scheme is currently an SSIP member for your intended category. Check whether you apply directly, through a linked platform or by mutual recognition. Beware third-party advisers claiming to be the awarding body.

2. Gather current evidence. Read the live question set, assign each request an owner and source document, and check expiry dates. A policy dated recently but describing another firm's activities is weak evidence. A task-specific assessment that shows how controls were used is stronger.

3. Submit and respond to assessor questions. Record what was submitted and the date, and answer clarification requests with revised or additional evidence. Do not assume a generic template will be accepted merely because it contains the right heading.

4. Validate the outcome. Confirm the category, legal entity, issue and expiry dates and official validation path on any issued certificate. Give the buyer the exact credential they requested, along with any other prequalification evidence.

5. Maintain the underlying system. Accreditation is a point-in-time assessment of arrangements and evidence. Keep risk assessments, competence, insurance and other records current after the certificate is issued. Plan renewal against the scheme's actual terms and the buyer's contract deadlines.

Example: a small roofing subcontractor

A roofing business wants work from a housebuilder that accepts SSIP and also asks for employers' liability evidence, a project RAMS pack and proof of working-at-height competence. The roofer checks whether an existing SSIP credential can be recognised, prepares the policy and real roofing assessments needed for the appropriate category, and confirms Acclaim's application requirements. Even if an Acclaim certificate is issued, the roofer still has to provide the separate insurance, worker competence and job-specific arrangements requested by the buyer. The certificate does not approve a particular roof method statement.

If the same business later becomes a principal contractor, its procurement and CDM role may change the evidence needed. It should ask the scheme and buyer whether its assessed category remains suitable instead of assuming the old certificate covers the new role.

Common mistakes

Confusing SSIP, Constructionline and CAS. SSIP concerns assessed health and safety criteria. Constructionline and Builder's Profile are broader supplier-data or prequalification services, and CAS covers wider prequalification topics. They may interact, but one label is not proof of all the others. Build UK's CAS page is useful for the separate CAS question.

Buying a named scheme without checking acceptance. Ask the target buyer what it recognises and whether Deem to Satisfy works for you. The answer may save time and money.

Assuming all evidence is paperwork. A certificate can show an assessed management system; the contractor still needs to implement controls, supervise work and correct failures on site.

Quoting stale prices or times. The current scheme may vary fees and turnaround by business or assessment category. Confirm directly before planning a tender around a deadline.

Letting the credential lapse. Track the certificate alongside the policies, training and insurances underpinning it. A current certificate does not excuse an expired insurance policy or untrained operative.

Where Complys fits

A contractor may use a verified document system to keep accreditation certificates, renewal dates, underlying policies, training and project records findable. Complys's public UK guides describe broader worker, RAMS and document workflows, but an Acclaim-specific application, assessment or automatic pass is not verified here. Do not claim Complys awards or renews Acclaim. The integration owner should confirm the actual UK host (.com or .co.uk), applicable money page and feature implementation. A safe next step is to list the evidence the scheme asks for, identify gaps and keep the documents current while applying through the official scheme.

Critical verification gap: Official Acclaim application pages were not retrievable in this writer-side research. Before publication, verify current scheme name/status, exact application URL, categories, fees, renewal and any claims about ownership directly with Acclaim/SSIP. This copy intentionally avoids those unverified details.

Writer-side QA: Acclaim-specific intent, practical evidence process, primary SSIP sources, no invented fee/time/product claim. READY means the useful guide copy is prepared; the explicit scheme and repository gates remain open for independent review.
