Constructionline Gold requirements: what suppliers need to prepare

Constructionline Gold is a supplier prequalification membership and verification level, not a statutory licence to carry out construction work. Its current Gold and Platinum supplier checklist guide organises Gold evidence across identity, work categories, insurance, corporate/professional standing, health and safety, fairness/inclusion/respect, environmental management, quality management, information management and building safety. The evidence required for a particular company depends on its answers, work categories, size, audited certifications and any exemption the scheme accepts. Use the current Constructionline portal as the final question set; the public PDF is the planning baseline, not a substitute for the live application.

The commercial reason to prepare Gold is that some buyers request that level or the Common Assessment Standard. Constructionline says Gold aligns with the Common Assessment Standard. That does not mean every buyer accepts Gold for every project, that a supplier automatically wins work, or that Gold replaces project-specific suitability, insurance, technical competence and site checks. A tender may name Gold specifically, or it may accept another assessment route. Read the procurement documents before buying a membership.

What Gold assesses

Constructionline's February 2026 guide lays out a path to a verified profile and distinguishes mandatory questions, advisory questions and possible exemptions. The sections are interdependent: company identity and staff numbers can affect what appears later. The guide asks suppliers to navigate the Compliance app, select Overview, then Resolve by Constructionline Gold under “Compliance by Certification Level.” Individual requirements then show submitted, verified, missing or action-required status. The current portal may differ, so follow its current prompts.

Evidence areaWhat to assemble before opening the question setScope check
Identity and company informationCorrect legal entity, address, directors/partners, financial and related-company informationNames must align with policies, certificates and Companies House or equivalent records.
Work categoriesActivities the business actually provides, plus category-specific licence/accreditation where requiredDo not select a category the company cannot evidence; some categories need additional proof.
InsuranceCurrent policies/certificates in the correct company name and at any required scope/limitBuyer limits and Constructionline's question requirements can differ.
Corporate and professional standingRelevant declarations, accounts/financial information and standing evidenceAnswer for the actual legal entity, not a loosely related trading name.
Health and safetyPolicy, responsibilities, risk-management process, training evidence and task-relevant arrangementsEvidence should match whether the supplier is contractor, principal contractor, designer or another role.
Fairness, inclusion and respectPolicies/practices requested by the live schemeCheck applicability and accepted evidence.
Environmental managementEnvironmental policy/process and activity evidence appropriate to the workDo not submit a generic policy that cannot be implemented.
Quality managementQuality controls, responsibilities, inspection and correction approachShow how the supplier controls work, not only that it owns a certificate.
Information managementInformation-control policy, competence and records where askedRespond to actual scheme questions and work type.
Building safetyRole- and building-related capability/evidence where the question set requires itDo not represent Gold verification as an approval to work on a higher-risk building.

The official supplier guide is long because it provides question-level instructions. This table is a preparation aid only. Constructionline says some advisory questions can remain incomplete with feedback shown to buyers; exemptions can apply for audited certifications, irrelevance to the business and a defined micro-company threshold. Do not self-grant an exemption because you think a question feels excessive. Use the portal's exemption route and retain the decision.

Prepare in a sensible order

1. Confirm whether Gold is the right tender requirement

Read the invitation or framework conditions. Is the buyer asking for Constructionline Gold, the Common Assessment Standard, a particular SSIP assessment, or a broader prequalification score? These are related but not identical labels. The existing Complys CHAS, SMAS and Constructionline comparison owns the choice-between-schemes question. This page answers how to prepare Gold evidence once Gold is relevant. If the buyer names a specific membership, ask whether alternatives are accepted before assuming an SSIP certificate alone satisfies it.

2. Verify the company identity first

Settle the legal entity, trading name, related companies and addresses. Constructionline's guide says documents should clearly show the company name or logo; certificates generally need the full company name or a scope letter. It also says many policies need a date and approval by the appropriate director or equivalent within the last 12 months. Check these exact rules in the current guide and portal. The person assembling the application should not quietly upload an affiliate's insurance in place of the applicant's cover.

3. Select work categories accurately

Use categories that match the activities for which the company wants to be found and assessed. The official guide says all companies need at least one work category and that some categories require a licence or specific insurance. For instance, do not treat a general construction business profile as proof of a regulated gas-work category. Check the exact current category requirement, the relevant issuer and the scope of the licence or accreditation before submission.

4. Assemble a question-to-evidence index

Create one row per portal requirement: question reference, evidence owner, document, legal entity, version/date, expiry, applicability, scheme status and any reviewer query. Do this before uploading a folder of undifferentiated PDFs. The index helps the team see missing evidence, avoid a wrong-company certificate and answer a verifier's request without rebuilding the whole pack.

5. Submit, track and answer clarification requests

Constructionline's guide describes Action Required, Submitted for Assessment, Missing Answers and Verified states. A submitted item is not yet verified. Check for returned questions and respond with the missing fact or correctly named document. The guide says an assessment can take up to 10 working days, but do not promise this as a guaranteed turnaround or tender deadline. If a bid depends on Gold verification, allow time for rework and confirm the current service position with Constructionline.

6. Keep the profile verified

Constructionline assigns individual expiry dates to verified requirements. Its February 2026 guide says the system sends email reminders and shows items in Action Required 30 days before expiry; licences can determine the requirement expiry, while some non-licence requirements are set one year from verification. These are Constructionline portal rules, not a statement that every underlying training course, safety policy or legal certificate has a one-year statutory life. Build an internal renewal owner and lead time so a document is updated before the scheme marks the requirement incomplete. A buyer may also ask for newer evidence at a project gate.

Gold, SSIP and Platinum: keep the distinctions clear

Gold is Constructionline's verified membership level aligned to the Common Assessment Standard. The scheme offers health-and-safety SSIP options, but the exact package and assessment included with a membership need to be checked in the current offer. Do not call every Constructionline registration an SSIP certificate. Platinum is a different level: Constructionline's supplier guide says applicants must first complete and verify Gold questions, then arrange an on-site audit for Platinum. This article is not a Platinum preparation guide and should not promise an upgrade automatically.

Likewise, Gold does not override the legal competence obligations on a particular construction project. HSE's CDM 2015 guidance asks contractors to have the skills, knowledge, experience and organisational capability to carry out their work safely. A client/principal contractor still needs to consider the work, people, design and site, even when the supplier holds Gold.

Example: a small subcontractor applying for Gold

A groundworks company has a live health-and-safety policy and insurance, but its training records are spread across a supervisor's email and its work categories include activities it has never performed. It should first correct the categories and company details, then assemble a training matrix with the people and task-appropriate evidence; Constructionline's guide explicitly asks in its health-and-safety section for an up-to-date training matrix with expiry dates or examples of individual training records. It should review the policy signature/date and insurance naming, assign an evidence owner to each question and upload documents to the correct portal requirement. If Constructionline returns a clarification, the supplier answers that question and keeps the profile's action queue monitored. The result is an assessable submission, not a guarantee of Gold approval.

Common reasons an application stalls

Where Complys can help, and where it cannot

An internal evidence register can organise policies, insurance, workforce training, owners and renewal dates so the right current file is available for a question. The proposed money-page link is contractor prequalification software, but its live route, exact capabilities and plan access must be verified from implementation before publication. Complys does not issue Constructionline Gold, submit the application on the supplier's behalf or guarantee that Constructionline or a buyer accepts evidence. The official portal and Constructionline's verification team decide scheme status. This guide can support readiness; it should not be written as a substitute for the scheme's own requirements.
