How to write RAMS

Good RAMS aren't long — they're specific. The aim is a document that reflects the real job, names the real hazards, and sets out a safe sequence anyone on the crew can follow. Here's a practical way to write RAMS that pass review.
1. Start with the risk assessment
Follow HSE's process: identify the hazards, assess the risks (who could be harmed and how seriously), decide the controls, record your findings, and set a date to review. Base it on the actual task, site and crew — not a generic hazard list copied from another job.
2. Apply the hierarchy of control
For each hazard, work down the hierarchy: can you eliminate it, then reduce it, isolate it, control it, and only then rely on PPE and safe behaviour? Reviewers look for controls that follow this order, not a document that jumps straight to "wear gloves and take care".
3. Turn the controls into a method statement
Write the sequence of operations step by step, building each control into the relevant step. Cover access and egress, plant and equipment, materials and substances (COSHH), working at height or excavation controls, PPE, and welfare, first aid and emergency arrangements.
4. Name names and keep it specific
Say who is responsible for what, what competence or training they need, and reference the supporting risk assessments. Specific beats generic every time — a RAMS that clearly matches the job in front of the reviewer is the one that gets approved.
5. Brief it, then review it
A RAMS only works if the crew is briefed on it before work starts and signs to confirm. Record the briefing, and review the RAMS if the job, site or method changes. It should be prepared or checked by a competent person.
