Minimum is NPTC CS30 (chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting) and CS31 (felling small trees up to 380mm). Climbing tree surgeons need CS38 (aerial cutting using rope and harness) and CS39 (aerial chainsaw use). Tree surgery on highways may require CS41 (windblown trees). Complys tracks every ticket and refresher.
ARB Approved Contractor is the Arboricultural Association's quality scheme. Not legally required but commonly required by local authorities, large estates and commercial clients. It demonstrates documented training, equipment maintenance, and insurance - all of which Complys helps you maintain.
Standard first aid courses don't cover chainsaw lacerations and remote-area emergency response. Forestry first aid (+F) covers severe bleeding, fracture management, and rescue from confined or aerial positions. It's legally required under PUWER and LOLER for chainsaw operators.
Tree surgery carries some of the highest liability exposure in trades. UK tree surgeons typically carry £5m to £10m public liability (with falling tree cover), employers liability (£10m statutory), plant and tools cover, and goods-in-transit. Some local authority work requires £10m+ public liability.
