Healthcare providers, care homes, NHS contractors and facilities management companies working in regulated environments face some of the most complex compliance requirements of any sector. Staff checks, mandatory training and contractor management all require robust systems and up-to-date records.
Staff compliance
DBS checks
- Enhanced DBS check — required for all staff working directly with patients, children or vulnerable adults
- Standard DBS check — for staff in regulated activity with reduced direct contact
- DBS Update Service subscription — allows continuous checking rather than full renewals. Subscription must be current for each worker.
- DBS checks should be renewed periodically (most organisations require renewal every 3 years)
Mandatory training
- Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR — annual renewal
- Fire safety training — annual renewal
- Manual handling — annual renewal
- Infection prevention and control
- Safeguarding adults — Level 1, 2 or 3 depending on role
- Safeguarding children — where applicable
- Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (where applicable)
- Information governance / GDPR awareness
- Health and safety awareness
- Lone worker training (where applicable)
Professional registration
- NMC registration for nurses and midwives — renewed annually online
- GMC registration for doctors
- HCPC registration for allied health professionals, social workers and others
- CQC registration for regulated activities
Contractor compliance
Any contractor working in a healthcare or care setting must also meet additional requirements:
- DBS check at appropriate level before site access
- Site induction including infection control procedures
- Evidence of relevant insurance and accreditation
- Compliance with CQC requirements where applicable
Organisational compliance
- CQC registration and current inspection rating
- Information governance framework (Data Security and Protection Toolkit for NHS)
- Lone worker policy and monitoring system
- Incident reporting system (Datix or equivalent)
- Business continuity plan
- Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
Compliance checklist summary
