How to verify a CSCS card before site access
A photo of a worker's CSCS card is not the same as checking that the card is current, genuine and appropriate for the occupation. The official CSCS FAQ directs clients and contractors to CSCS Smart Check for electronic verification of CSCS-logoed cards. The result can show the card scheme, type, qualifications, expiry and whether a card has been revoked. A visual inspection alone cannot establish all of that.
This is a site-gate verification task, not a general article about applying for a card. CSCS says holding a card is not a legislative requirement; the principal contractor or client decides its site policy. It also says a card is not expected for people attending site to perform non-construction occupations. Do not write a policy that demands a CSCS card from every visitor or office-based worker.
Make the check against the person and the task
Confirm the worker's identity through the site's normal process, then use the official CSCS Smart Check app, website or approved integrated route for the CSCS-logoed card. Compare the returned name and card record with the worker in front of you. Check the card scheme, occupation or role, qualification information, expiry and status against the specific work to be performed. A valid card for one occupation is not permission to perform another.
The official CSCS Smart Check support page describes what to do when a scan fails: try its website or manual entry, ensure the correct scheme and details were entered, and contact the relevant card scheme if the issue persists. Do not treat a failed scan as proof of fraud. Equally, do not waive verification simply because a plastic card looks convincing.
| Result | Site-gate decision to record |
|---|---|
| Valid and role-appropriate | Record the check and continue to separate induction, task authorisation and site-specific controls. |
| Valid but wrong occupation or unclear scope | Stop the relevant work decision; obtain role clarification and the correct evidence. |
| Expired or revoked | Do not treat the card as current; follow the issuing scheme's renewal or review route. |
| Unable to verify because of a system or card issue | Use the official alternative check or contact the scheme; record the temporary decision and do not invent a positive result. |
This table is an editorial workflow, not a CSCS-issued access policy. The actual site controller decides access within its duties and contract arrangements. An expired card should be addressed using the current CSCS support instructions.
Keep the card check in its place
CSCS says a card does not guarantee site entry. The principal contractor remains responsible for the site's access decision. HSE's construction contractor guidance requires contractors engaging workers to ensure appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and training, or to supervise those developing them. The card helps verify a relevant qualification route; it cannot replace the site induction, work-specific briefing, supervision, permit or assessment of the actual task.
For non-construction personnel, use the site policy and CSCS's guidance on occupations without a card. Appropriate induction, escorting or risk controls may still be needed. A blanket โno card, no entry for anyoneโ rule can reject people for whom no card is intended.
Keep a short record of the person, date, card scheme/type, verification method, result, checked role, reviewer and exception. Avoid retaining unnecessary copies of the worker's personal data. The training-certificate sharing guide covers the related data-protection decision; the competence-versus-accreditation guide covers the broader assessment.
When evaluating contractor management software, ask for a demonstration of how named-worker evidence, expiry, review decision and site access are recorded. This article does not claim Complys connects to CSCS Smart Check, authenticates cards automatically or grants access to a site.
