Why this matters
PPE only protects you if it fits, is in good condition, and is actually worn. Cheap or inappropriate PPE creates a false sense of security worse than no PPE at all. Most PPE failures are because of fit, maintenance or non-use - not because the equipment failed.
Key hazards and controls
Key messages
- 1.PPE is the LAST resort, not the first
- 2.Damaged PPE is worse than no PPE - it gives false confidence
- 3.Wear it correctly or it does not work
- 4.PPE is provided free under UK law - any employer charging for PPE is breaking the law
- 5.Replace at the right intervals, not when it falls apart
Signs of trouble (for supervisors)
Things to spot during site walks that suggest the message has not landed:
- !Hard hats with cracks or impact damage in use
- !Steel toes exposed in safety boots
- !Workers using wrong glove type for the chemicals
- !Hi-vis clothing in poor condition
- !Tight-fitting RPE without face fit testing record
