ISO 9001 vs ISO 14001 vs ISO 45001 — what's the difference?

They are the three most common ISO management-system standards, and they are often confused. The short version: same skeleton, different subject. Quality, environment, and health & safety.

What each one is for

ISO 9001 — quality. A quality management system: consistently meeting customer and regulatory requirements and improving over time. The current edition is ISO 9001:2026.

ISO 14001 — environment. An environmental management system: understanding and controlling your impact, from resource use and pollution to waste and, in the 2026 edition, biodiversity and climate. See ISO 14001:2026.

ISO 45001 — health & safety. An occupational health and safety management system: preventing work-related injury and ill health. The current edition is ISO 45001:2018; a revision (adding climate-action content) is in development.

What they share

All three are built on ISO's Harmonized Structure — the same top-level clauses for context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. That is why the same underlying disciplines — document control, competence, internal audit, corrective action, management review — appear in every one, and why they combine so cleanly into an integrated management system.

An important distinction for ISO 45001

Certification to ISO 45001 is not the same as complying with health-and-safety law. A management system helps you manage safety well, but your legal duties (in Great Britain, under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and its regulations) apply regardless of whether you are certified. FAQs

Do I need all three?

Only the ones that match your risks and what customers or tenders ask for. A manufacturer might want all three; a professional-services firm may only need ISO 9001; a company with significant safety risk may prioritise ISO 45001. They are independent certifications — you can hold one, two or all three.

Can one system cover all three?

Yes. Because they share the same Harmonized Structure, most of the machinery — document control, competence, internal audit, corrective action, management review — is common, so you can run them as one integrated management system rather than three separate ones.

Which should we do first?

Usually the one tied to your biggest driver: customer/quality demands (ISO 9001), environmental obligations or client pressure (ISO 14001), or safety risk (ISO 45001). Doing one well builds the shared foundation the others then reuse.
