When is a manual handling risk assessment needed?
Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, an employer must first avoid hazardous manual handling so far as reasonably practicable. Where it cannot be avoided, the employer must make a suitable assessment of it and then reduce the risk of injury so far as reasonably practicable. What is TILE?
TILE is the set of factors a manual handling assessment weighs up: the Task (how the load is moved — posture, distance, frequency), the Individual (the person's capability), the Load (weight, size, whether it is awkward, hot or sharp) and the Environment (space, floors, lighting, temperature). Is there a legal maximum weight a person can lift?
No. The Regulations set no absolute maximum weight. The right control depends on the whole TILE picture, not the weight alone.
