Policy & responsibilities

You have a written health & safety policy (a legal requirement if you have 5 or more employees).

A competent person (in-house or external) helps you meet your health & safety duties.

The HSE 'Health and Safety Law' poster is displayed, or the equivalent leaflet given to staff.

Risk assessment

You carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments (recorded if you have 5+ employees).

A fire risk assessment has been carried out and is kept up to date.

Risk assessments are reviewed when things change and controls are actually in place.

Insurance & legal duties

Employers' Liability insurance is in force (at least £5m) with the certificate available to staff.

You know what must be reported under RIDDOR and do so when required.

First aid, welfare & fire

There's adequate first aid provision — a stocked kit and trained first aider(s) as needed.

Welfare facilities (toilets, washing, drinking water) are provided.

Fire precautions are in place: detection, extinguishers, clear escape routes and drills.

Training & consultation

Employees get a health & safety induction and training for the tasks they do.

You consult employees on health & safety matters.

Accidents & monitoring

You keep an accident book / incident records.

You review incidents and near-misses and act to prevent them recurring.

Health & safety is about proof, not good intentions

Most small businesses are broadly safe places to work — but if the HSE visits, a client audits you, or someone has an accident, being safe isn't enough on its own: you have to be able to show your policy, your risk assessments, your training and your records. This checker highlights where that evidence is missing before it matters.

Workplace health & safety — FAQs

What are the basic health & safety duties for a small business?

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and its regulations, employers must: assess and control risks; have a written health & safety policy if they employ 5 or more people; appoint a competent person; provide information, instruction and training; provide adequate first aid, welfare and fire precautions; hold Employers' Liability insurance; consult employees; and report certain incidents under RIDDOR. This checker walks through those core duties.

Does it apply to my sector?

The core duties apply to virtually every employer — shops, offices, workshops, care settings, sites and more — which is why this checker is deliberately general. Specific activities (working at height, COSHH, manual handling, etc.) add further requirements on top, so treat the result as an indicative baseline.

Is my data stored?

No. There's no login and nothing you enter is saved — it runs entirely in your browser. Run it as often as you like.
