Spray Painting COSHH assessment

Spray painting creates a fine mist of paint, solvents and - for two-pack products - isocyanates. It is a high-exposure activity that needs proper ventilation, RPE and control of the spray area.

The hazards

  • Fine paint mist inhaled deep into the lungs
  • Two-pack (2K) paints release isocyanates - asthma sensitisers
  • Solvent vapour and fire risk
  • Overspray affects others nearby

Who is at risk

Sprayers and applicatorsAnyone near the spray areaVehicle and industrial finishers

Exposure routes

  • Inhalation of mist and vapour
  • Skin and eye contact

Health effects

  • Occupational asthma (especially from isocyanates)
  • Headaches and dizziness from solvents
  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Fire risk from vapour

Control measures (hierarchy of control)

Controls should be applied in order — eliminate or substitute first, then engineering controls, then PPE as the last line.

  • Spray in a ventilated booth or room with LEV
  • Air-fed breathing apparatus for isocyanate (2K) spraying
  • Substitute for water-based or non-isocyanate products where possible
  • Restrict access and set a clearance time after spraying
  • Control ignition sources; store paint safely

PPE & RPE

  • Air-fed breathing apparatus (2K) or appropriate respirator
  • Spray overalls and gloves
  • Eye protection

First aid

  • Move to fresh air immediately and monitor breathing
  • Get urgent medical help for anyone with breathing symptoms after isocyanate exposure
  • Wash skin and irrigate eyes as needed

Workplace exposure limit (WEL)

Isocyanates in 2K paint are limited to 0.02 mg/m³ (8-hour) / 0.07 mg/m³ (15-minute) as -NCO; solvent limits vary by product. Check EH40 and the product safety data sheet, and control mist and vapour as low as reasonably practicable.

Spray Painting COSHH FAQs

Do I need a spray booth to spray 2K paint?

You need effective ventilation - a spray booth or room with LEV - and air-fed breathing apparatus, because two-pack paint mist contains isocyanates that cause occupational asthma. Cartridge masks alone are not enough for the full task.

Is water-based spray paint safer?

It removes much of the solvent and, if non-isocyanate, the sensitiser risk - so substitution is a strong control. You still need to control the fine mist with ventilation and suitable RPE.
