How long does a DBS check last?
A DBS certificate has no official expiry date. It is a snapshot of a person’s record on the day it was issued — it does not stop being valid on a set date. What actually decides “how long it lasts” is your organisation’s policy, any sector rules, and whether the certificate is on the Update Service.

There is no statutory expiry
This is the single most common misunderstanding. A DBS certificate is accurate as at its issue date and becomes older after that; it is not stamped with an expiry. There is no universal legal “renewal” deadline that applies to every role. [GOV.UK] Anyone who tells you a DBS “expires after three years” as a rule of law is mistaken — three years (or any period) is a policy choice, not a statutory expiry.

Does a DBS check expire?

How often should DBS checks be renewed?
There is no single legal renewal period that applies to everyone. Rechecking is driven by the organisation's own policy and by any sector-specific rules or regulator expectations. Many organisations set a review period (for example every few years) and use the Update Service in between; confirm what applies to your sector.
What is the Update Service's role?
For eligible Standard and Enhanced certificates, the Update Service lets a certificate be kept current so that, with the individual's consent, an employer can carry out an online status check instead of applying for a brand-new certificate. It is the main way to avoid repeat full checks. It does not cover Basic checks.
Can I keep using an old DBS certificate?
It depends on the organisation and the rules that apply. A certificate does not stop being valid on a fixed date, but an employer may decide it is too old to rely on, or a sector rule may require a fresh check or a status check. Whether an existing certificate can be accepted is covered under portability and the Update Service.
Is a recheck a legal requirement?
Sometimes — some sectors and roles have their own rechecking expectations — but there is no universal statutory 'DBS renewal' deadline. Treat rechecking as a matter of your safeguarding policy and the specific rules for the role, not as a fixed national rule.
